6 Rules For Never Hitting Your Claude Limit
You sit down to analyse a company. 40 minutes later Claude tells you you have hit your limit, and you have produced nothing. The instinct is to blame the plan. Usually it is the workflow. There are 6 things that fix this, and none of them involve upgrading.
There are 2 limits, not 1
Most people know about one of them, which is why the other one catches you out.
How much you use over time
Think of it as a budget. It runs in 5-hour blocks, and the block starts the moment you send your first message, not at midnight or on the hour.
There is also a weekly cap sitting on top of it, and that resets on a fixed day and time set for your account.
How much fits in one chat
Claude can only hold so much in its head at once for a single conversation.
Once a chat gets long enough, it starts compressing the earlier parts so it can keep going.
They are different things, and you can run into either one without touching the other. A single chat can get too big while your weekly budget is barely touched. Or you can be out of budget entirely on a chat that is 3 messages long.
2 things people do not realise. Everything comes out of the same pot: the website, the desktop app, Claude Code. Heavy use in one leaves less for the others.
And the size of your last question is not what costs you. It is how much Claude is carrying while you ask it.
Here is what actually moves the needle, straight from Anthropic's own guidance.
Every one of those 7 is either a setting or a habit. 5 of the 6 rules control them. The 6th tells you whether it is working.
