One command inside Claude's Equity Research plugin runs the company research, builds the financial model, does the valuation, and compiles it all into a 40-page report. Here is exactly how to do it, step by step, and what to look at.
The command that does an analyst's homework
Inside Claude's Equity Research plugin there is a command called /initiating-coverage. It produces a full research report on a stock of your choice, following the kind of structure top financial institutions use. The point is simple: the depth of research that used to take a team of analysts weeks, you can now get most of the way to yourself.
An equity research report is the document a bank analyst writes to explain a company: what it does, how it makes money, what it is worth, and what could go wrong. "Initiating coverage" is the first, full report an analyst writes when they start following a stock.
Your Claude set up
You need three things in place first. The whole set up takes a couple of minutes.
A paid Claude plan
The cheapest paid plan is around $20 per month.
Claude desktop + Cowork
The plugins live in the Cowork function on the desktop app.
Install the plugins
Cowork → Customize → install. Takes about 2 minutes.
No paid data connectors needed. The report is built from free, official sources on the web, like the SEC website and the company's own published filings.
Skills are just recipes
Open Claude, go to Cowork, then Customize, and you will see the plugins. Open the Equity Research plugin and you will find a collection of Skills. A Skill is simply a set of pre-recorded instructions.
Think of a Skill like a recipe. Once someone has mastered a dish, they write down the steps to follow and the ingredients (here, the data) needed before starting, and what not to do. The command we use today is one of those recipes.
The one we want is initiating coverage. To run it, you go into Cowork and type the command, then tell it which stock and which task to run:
/initiating-coverageIt turns blue, which means it is referencing an existing Skill. Then you simply write that you want it for your chosen stock, and to run Task 1.
One command, a 5-task workflow
The Skill asks Claude to follow a structured, 5-task workflow.
Task 1 — Company Research
Claude produces a document covering the company overview and history, management bios, product and service analysis, the industry overview, competitive analysis, market sizing (Total Addressable Market, or "TAM") and a risk assessment. It comes out as a simple text file, which you can ask Claude to convert into a Word document.
Total Addressable Market is the total possible revenue available if a company sold to every customer who could ever want its product. It is a rough sense of how big the opportunity is.
Just with Task 1, you already get a comprehensive picture of the stock, from one or two sentences of prompting.
